or substituting with us is an entre' to landing a full-time lead
teaching position. We add a grade level and hire approximately 10
new lead teachers each year. School leaders use assistant teaching
and permanent subs as an opportunity to see potential lead teacher
hires in action. They observe assistant teachers and subs in the
classroom and include assistant teachers and subs in teacher
professional development initiatives, significantly advancing an
assistant teacher's prospects for being hired as a full-time lead
teacher. (Indeed, each year several formerly assistant teachers
and/or subs have been promoted to a lead teacher position.) Given
the above, assistant teachers and subs are generally expected to
have the capacity to pick-up a lesson plan and deliver first-rate
instruction if a teacher is out so that the learning progress of
our students will not miss a beat. If you believe you are ready to

Teacher Responsibilities Values, Expectations, and Commitment
Assistant Teachers must commit themselves to the schools values and
mission. Moreover, appreciating the example of excellent schools
which succeed at helping all students achieve at a high level,
Assistant Teachers must hold high expectations for each student and
commit themselves to helping every student achieve their full
potential. Teaching and Assessment Assistant Teachers will assist
our educators as they work to execute the schools education and
character development programs. They will assist with assessments,
grading, and other classroom responsibilities; will provide student
support; and will often be asked to teach a small group of students
or even an entire class. In addition, they will assist with student
arrival and breakfast in the morning, with lunch, and with student
dismissal in the afternoon. Culture and Classroom Management
Assistant Teachers must communicate, and also model for their
students, behaviors which befit the high expectations culture and
the caring school climate to which we are committed. Under the
guidance of the teacher they are assisting, they must apply School
and classroom rules consistently and effectively; make use of
preventive discipline; and effectively supervise students both in
their classroom and elsewhere on School grounds. Teamwork,
Professional Relations, and Professional Development Assistant
Teachers should see themselves as members of a team and should
commit themselves to their own and to their peers on-going
professional development. Assistant Teachers may be required to
attend professional development sessions and to participate
actively in school meetings. To improve their instructional skills
and classroom management, they may also be asked to observe master
teachers and meet with teaching coaches to gain feedback on their
lessons and pedagogy. Additional teacher supports include: A
research-based curriculum and supporting curricular materials (you
will have the freedom to develop your own, but after a full day in
the classroom, you may appreciate not always having to develop
learning objectives and curricular resources from scratch);
High-quality formative assessments, aligned with our curriculum,
that will help you immediately identify when students in your class
have not achieved mastery of a skill, concept, or knowledge item;
Full-time reading and math specialists who will be available to
tutor students who are struggling to master an essential skill, and
social workers who will be available to help students struggling
with outside problems; The staffing of our afterschool program by
Academic Tutors, so we can limit the length of our teachers
work-days; Abundant planning periods that provide teachers an
opportunity to prepare up-coming lessons during the school day.
INDINSTRUCTION Requirements We generally seek the same qualities in
assistant teachers and permanent subs that we seek in lead
teachers. Therefore, assistant teacher and sub candidates should
hold of a certificate of eligibility for teaching in elementary
school grades. (Exceptions may be made.) Benefits Teacher Supports
Teachers are part of a school-wide team that includes many
different professionals and they receive career-long coaching and
professional development support from their Academy Dean and Dean
of Students, their Grade Level or Department Head, and our
Coordinator of Special Education. Teachers work closely with their
grade level peers, with whom they engage within professional
learning communities (PLCs) assisting one another to solve
problems. Additional teacher supports include: A research-based
curriculum and supporting curricular materials; High-quality
