Job Description:
Summary:The primary function of an Emergency Department
Physician (MD or DO) is to work under the supervision of the
Director of Emergency Medicine, providing medical care to patients
of all ages presenting to the Emergency Department (or in certain
situations, at other areas on the hospital grounds). Emergency
physicians work collaboratively with other members of the Emergency
Department staff including but not limited to physician assistants,
nurse practitioners, registered nurses, technicians, and other
ancillary members of the department. Emergency physicians will also
interface with community medical providers, hospitalists, and EMS
providers.Training/License: Current New York State License to
practice medicine Active unrestricted DEA license to prescribe
medications Completion of at least three years of post-graduate
training in Emergency Medicine Board-certified or board-eligible in
Emergency Medicine Proficiency in all procedures, techniques, and
skills listed in the delineation of privileges for Emergency
Department Physicians Minimum of 50 hours of approved CME annually
Responsibilities: In the absence of the Director of the Department,
the E.D. physician on duty is responsible for the operation of the
department and provides medical direction to all staff. Evaluate,
diagnose, and treat a broad array of acute and non-acute medical
and psychiatric conditions in patients of all ages presenting for
care in the Emergency Department. Work collaboratively with on-site
emergency department non-physician providers (PAs/NPs) Order and
interpret clinically appropriate tests Perform procedures within
the scope of practice and expertise as defined by the delineation
of privileges for emergency physicians Consult with private
physicians and/or hospitalists concerning patients in the Emergency
Department Provide safe discharge, admission, or transfer
dispositions of patients in the emergency department Coordinate
outpatient referral and follow-up care plans for patients being
discharged from the emergency department Communicate
diagnosis-specific education to patients and families/guardians.
Coordinate inter-facility transfers for patients in need of
services not offered at Good Samaritan Hospital Provide medical
control to paramedics and ambulance personnel. Supervise medical,
PA, NP, and/or EMT/paramedic students during clinical practice in
the emergency department setting Use an electronic medical record
(EMR) to document patient encounters in a timely fashion, place
orders for patient care, and view results Maintain current
emergency medicine knowledge and skills though independent study,
continuing medical education, and maintenance of board
certification Maintain current certifications in Basic and Advanced
Cardiac Life Support (BLS/ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support
(ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), plus any other
certifications, as required by the Medical Staff Office Practice
emergency medicine in an ethical manner consistent with
contemporary, evidence-based practice guidelines Exhibit
professionalism in the healthcare facility at all times Participate
in medical staff, department, and hospital affairs as applicable
Abide by departmental and hospital initiatives for practice quality
and performance improvement Understand basic principles of
documentation, coding, billing, and practice expense costs Maintain
knowledge and compliance with major federal and New York state
regulation that affect the practice of emergency medicine,
including, but not limited to the Emergency Medical Treatment and
Labor Act (EMTALA) and the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996
