JOB DESCRIPTION - GROUNDSKEEPERDEFINITION:Under direction of the District Grounds Keeper Supervisor and Facilities Manager, successfully accomplishes daily grounds keeping operations and support services for the Wayne Public Schools District. Performs general grounds keeper assignments and tasks to include cutting, raking, seeding, edging, blowing, and maintaining all properties of the Wayne Board of Education as assigned. Repair and install concrete and asphalt sidewalks, curbs, ramps, paths, driveways, parking lots and roadways. Repair, maintain and install fences including chain link, wood, vinyl and other fencing materials. Remove, replace and install signage throughout the district as assigned. Setup and maintain all athletic fields at two High Schools and other properties of the Wayne Board of Education as assigned. Remove accumulated snow and apply salt and de-icing products using trucks, plows, shovels and snow removal equipment. Operate tractors, backhoes, mowers, and other specialized grounds keeping equipment. Repair, paint and maintain all equipment in good working order.Must be well versed in safe operation off grounds equipment, familiar with IPM and it's relation to grounds maintenance.Must have verifiable snow removal experience ie., snow plow operations, salting/sanding, Athletic field maintenance and other work deemed necessary by supervision.REPORTS TO: District Grounds Keeper SupervisorDISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Duties include grounds keeping support and services for a district-wide grounds keeping program for a large K-12 school district. Grounds keepers exercise initiative and independence in accomplishing assigned tasks and compliance to departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to develop effective work processes and ability for problem solving grounds keeping operational issues. Ability to manage all grounds keeping activities and work loadsKEY DUTIES:* Performs general grounds keeper assignments and tasks to include cutting, raking, seeding, edging, blowing, and maintaining all properties of the Wayne Board of Education as assigned.* Repair and install concrete and asphalt sidewalks, curbs, ramps, paths, driveways, parking lots and roadways.* Repair, maintain and install fences including chain link, wood, vinyl and other fencing materials.* Remove, replace and install signage throughout the district as assigned.* Setup and maintain all athletic fields at two High Schools and other properties of the Wayne Board of Education as assigned.* Remove accumulated snow and apply salt and de-icing products using trucks, plows, shovels and snow removal equipment.* Operate tractors, backhoes, mowers, and other specialized grounds keeping equipment.* Repair, paint and maintain all equipment in good working order.* Maintain effective working relationships with other grounds keepers and works in cooperation with other Supervisors, Administrators and district personnel to effectively meet department grounds keeping objectives.* Ensures orders for materials, supplies, equipment and contracted services for grounds keeping work is appropriate for the scope of work or level of work assigned.* Coordinates and schedules assigned grounds keeping work with the District Grounds Keeper Supervisor.* Keeps the District Grounds Keeper Supervisor apprised at all times of the status of assigned grounds keeping tasks and assignments.* Respond to all grounds keeping emergencies as required; coordinate activities with other responders; utilize available resources to affect repairs and ensure the safety of the community and school district.* Perform a variety of field grounds keeping activities either alone or with other assigned personnel.* Perform other grounds keeping duties as directed by the Facilities Manager.* Pick-up and move obsolete or surplus equipment, furniture, materials and supplies as required through-out the district.* Support other departmental operations as required.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Possession of a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) and five years of skilled grounds keeping experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.New Jersey Certified Educational Facilities Manager certification desired.Criminal History Background Check (Fingerprinting)NJ Pesticide License - preferred.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:* Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform a variety of physical grounds keeping work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; use of a variety of hand and power tools; drive and operate motor vehicles, landscape equipment and heavy construction equipment; lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment; vision to read printed materials and computer screens; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio.* Must work in support of emergency and overtime activities as required.KNOWLEDGE OF:* Principles and practices of grounds keeping operations for a large school district.* Grounds keeping work procedures, equipment and tool use and safety related matters.* Policies, procedures, equipment, materials and supplies related to the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of grounds and infrastructure found in a municipal or educational (school) setting.* Safety practices and principles related to grounds keeping operations.* Applicable building and construction laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as it applies to grounds keeping operations.* Materials and supplies inventory control practices and principals.SKILL IN:* Accomplishing assigned duties including ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, coordinate, assist, clean-up and complete grounds keeping work in a productive and efficient manner.* Ability to complete complex grounds keeping work and repair tasks in area of assignment.* Assist in development of goals, objectives, procedures and work standards.* Ability to understand and interpret, apply and implement complex codes, regulations, blueprints and drawings.* Communication and effective interaction with co-workers, managers, subordinates, staff and the general public sufficient to exchange information and to receive and complete work assignments.
